The assay is based on competitive binding between drug or drug metabolite in the sample and drug conjugate immobilized on the membrane for limited binding sites on the fluorescent-labeled drug-specific antibody. When the sample is added to the test device, the fluorescent-labeled antibody binds to drug or drug metabolite in the sample. As the sample mixture migrates on the nitrocellulose membrane by capillary action, the drug-protein conjugate immobilized on the test line competes with the drug or drug metabolite in the sample for binding to the fluorescent-labeled antibody. The fluorescence signal captured on the test line is inversely proportional to the amount of drug or drug metabolite in the sample. The analyzer processes the signal to display the qualitative result.
